On-page SEO is the work done directly on a page to help search engines understand it and to help visitors use it. It is not about repeating a keyword as many times as possible. A well-optimised page has a clear purpose, useful content and clean technical signals.
Start with one primary search intent
Before editing the page, decide what question or commercial need it should answer. A service page targeting “ecommerce website development” should stay focused on that service instead of trying to rank equally for every digital service the company offers.
Write a specific SEO title
The title should accurately describe the page and make sense when seen alone in search results. Include the core topic naturally, then add location or brand information when it genuinely improves clarity.
Create a useful meta description
The meta description is an opportunity to summarise the page and encourage the right person to click. It should match the content on the page rather than promise something the page does not deliver.
Use one clear H1
The main heading should tell a visitor what the page is about immediately. Supporting sections can then use H2 and H3 headings to create a logical information hierarchy.
Answer the search intent in the main content
A service page should explain what the service includes, who it is for, how the process works, relevant proof, common questions and the next step. An informational article should answer the question directly before expanding into related details.
Add useful internal links
Internal links connect related topics and help both users and search engines discover the rest of the site. Use descriptive anchor text. For example, an ecommerce article can link naturally to an ecommerce development service rather than using a vague “click here” link.
Optimise images responsibly
Use appropriately sized images, modern formats such as WebP where practical, explicit dimensions to reduce layout shifts and descriptive alternative text when the image conveys meaningful information.
Check canonical and robots settings
Important public pages should normally be indexable and should declare the correct canonical URL. Drafts, internal tools and duplicate variations may require different handling.
Use structured data where it fits
Schema should describe what is actually present on the page. Service, Article, Organization, LocalBusiness and Breadcrumb structured data can be useful when they accurately represent the content.
Review mobile usability and performance
Do not treat page speed as a separate technical project. Oversized images, unnecessary scripts, unstable layouts and difficult mobile navigation directly affect the user experience.
Final review
Read the page as a potential customer, not as an SEO tool. If the page is clear, credible, easy to navigate and genuinely answers its target intent, most of the important on-page work will be moving in the right direction.
