“Custom website or WordPress?” is not really a question about which technology is better. It is a question about which approach fits the job. WordPress is a mature content-management platform. Custom development gives a team more control over how the application is structured and behaves.
When WordPress is a strong choice
WordPress works particularly well for content-led websites, company websites, blogs and many ecommerce projects using WooCommerce. Editors are familiar with the interface, there is a large ecosystem, and common publishing tasks can be handled without custom software.
Where WordPress can become complicated

Either approach can perform well when built carefully. WordPress performance depends on the theme, plugins, hosting and media strategy. A custom website can stay very lean, but poor custom code can also create problems. The quality of implementation matters more than the label.
Security and maintenance
WordPress requires regular updates to its core, themes and plugins. Custom applications require their own maintenance, dependency updates and security practices. Neither option is maintenance-free.
SEO
WordPress has excellent SEO tooling, but plugins do not replace a sound information architecture. Custom websites can implement the same essential controls directly: titles, descriptions, canonicals, sitemaps, schema, redirects and indexation settings.
A practical decision rule
If most of your requirements are publishing pages, articles, forms and standard ecommerce functionality, WordPress may be efficient. If your requirements read more like a software specification, custom development deserves serious consideration.
